Oedo-Koh - Aloeswood

This incense from Nippon Kodo’s Oedo-Koh series features the deep, rich fragrance of aloeswood—known as kyara in Japanese—and long regarded as the most luxurious of scents in Edo-period Japan. Its complex, resinous aroma is smooth, slightly sweet, and quietly smoky, evoking a sense of mystery, refinement, and spiritual depth.

In the days of old Edo, aloeswood was treasured by court nobles, feudal lords, and connoisseurs of incense-smelling ceremonies. Though rare and expensive, its legendary status extended beyond the elite—appearing in Kabuki and Joruri theatre, and even inspiring popular hair waxes scented to imitate its essence.
