The custom of hanami, or cherry blossom viewing, flourished during the Edo period. The beloved somei-yoshino variety, now ubiquitous throughout Japan, was first cultivated in a small village near Edo. These seasonal gatherings were more than mere strolls under blooming trees—they were social events filled with music, dancing, and fashion.
